Re: ADT, from everything I've read and heard about them, they're a sound choice. However, for folks who're not certain they're ready for the expense of a "professional installation required" system and monthly service charges, this may be overkill...
An alternative would be to sign up for a free webcam-based service like HomeCamera, which offers a lot of the same monitoring ability that ADT does, except it uses your own camera and is so easy that an absolute novice (read: me) could set it up. ;-)
